Mary Pickford, Henry B. Walthall, Lillian and Dorothy Gish, Tom Mix, Lionel Barrymore, Sessue Hayakawa and Harey Carey all appear in starring roles in our features lists for the first time.
Also in 1914, Sam Lucas became the first African-American to star in a feature film, playing Uncle Tom. The first ever film version of The Spoilers is released, as is the first full-length comedy, Tillie’s Punctured Romance. Directors Cecil B.. DeMille, Reginald Barker, Maurice Tourneur and Colin Campbell debut on our list in 1914 as well.
