Highlights of our List of 1914 Online Films
American feature production exploded in 1914, as over 350 feature films – almost one a day – were released. D.W. Griffith’s first feature film, Judith of Bethulia, was released in 1914. The Oz Film Manufacturing Company released a trio of dazzling and bizarre films dramatizing three of L. Frank Baum’s stories about the Kingdom of Oz, each starring Violet MacMillan. Mary Pickford, Henry B. Walthall, Lillian and Dorothy Gish, Tom Mix, Lionel Barrymore, Sessue Hayakawa and Harey Carey all appear in starring roles in our features lists for the first time.
Also in 1914, Sam Lucas became the first African-American to star in a feature film, playing Uncle Tom. The first ever film version of The Spoilers is released, as is the first full-length comedy, Tillie’s Punctured Romance. Directors Cecil B.. DeMille, Reginald Barker, Maurice Tourneur and Colin Campbell debut on our list in 1914 as well.
